Alan Thorpe (Editor)

Alan Thorpe has been in marine journalism since 1975, prior to which he served at sea in the British Merchant Navy and ashore with Texaco Overseas Tankships.

His first job in journalism was as Technical Editor of Shipping World & Shipbuilder, for which he became Editor in 1979. Deciding on a freelance career in 1985, he has built up a wide range of involvement in marine journals.

He has been Editor of Port Engineering Management (PEM) for the past few years, and now plans to develop the journal further. He is also currently Editor of Shiprepair Newsletter (weekly) and Shipcare (bi-monthly) and also supplies regular columns to Lloyd’s List and Marine Log (New York).

He is also Chairman of the Shiprepair & Conversion event, organised by Informa.

Paul Bartlett (Deputy Editor)

Paul Bartlett is a shipping consultant with a background in ship finance and shipping business journalism. He now works for himself but, prior to this, spent the last five years working as a Director of the London Shipping Consultancy, a provider of shipping due diligence services to financial institutions engaged in maritime lending.

Prior to that, Paul worked in the London office of First International, a Bermuda-based ship leasing and finance company. During the nine years he spent there, the company owned and bareboat chartered some 20 vessels to end users including major oil companies, steel conglomerates and state shipping lines.

Earlier, in 1978, having completed his Degree in Nautical Studies, Paul had joined Seatrade magazine as a trainee journalist. He held various editorial positions at the magazine before being appointed Editor in 1982. He left the magazine to join First International in 1987.
